Alabama's Offensive Line Shakeup: Chris Kapilovic's Departure and the Road Ahead (2026)

Alabama and Offensive Line Coach Chris Kapilovic Part Ways: A Season of Struggles and Changes

Alabama has made a significant change in its coaching staff, parting ways with offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic after just two seasons. This decision comes as the team faces challenges and a series of unexpected setbacks.

Kapilovic joined the Crimson Tide under head coach Kalen DeBoer, who led the team to a 10-3 record in his first year. However, the offensive line struggled to meet expectations, which had been high entering the season. Three players were initially selected for the Preaseason All-SEC Teams: left tackle Kadyn Proctor, center Parker Brailsford, and right guard Jaeden Roberts. Yet, the line's performance fell short, with Alabama managing only 104.1 yards per game, ranking near the bottom in the SEC.

The line's struggles were evident in the number of pressures allowed (183) and sacks conceded (32), both the most in the conference. The situation was further complicated by the upheaval within the line. Roberts, who had shown promise for the NFL draft, became a reserve player, while right tackle Wilkin Formby transitioned to right guard. Geno VanDeMark and Kam Dewberry shared the left guard position, and eight different offensive linemen received significant playing time.

The challenges persisted as Proctor and Brailsford declared for the draft, Formby transferred, and Dewberry and VanDeMark exhausted their eligibility. Only Michael Carroll returned after starting six games at right tackle. Additionally, Alabama lost several reserve offensive linemen to the transfer portal, including Olaus Alinen, Arkel Anugwom, Micah DeBose, and Roq Montgomery.

To address these changes, Alabama signed multiple replacements: Kaden Strayhorn, Ty Haywood, Racin Delgatty, Nick Brooks, Ethan Fields, and Jayvin James. The team also welcomed five freshmen linemen: Jared Doughty, Tyrell Miller, Chris Booker, Bear Fretwell, and Bryson Cooley. These additions aim to rebuild the offensive line and improve the team's performance in the upcoming season.
