Some may not appreciate it, but the new hotel at Garema Place, known as Crystalbrook Aurora, promises to be a significant addition to the city. The Crystalbrook Collection's initiative is poised to transform the landscape of Garema Place, as illustrated by some impressive images from their collection.
In Canberra, many residents might question the necessity of another five-star hotel, particularly amidst a cost-of-living crisis that is affecting so many. While it is true that guests who typically frequent luxury accommodations often do not face financial difficulties, critics argue that this project reflects the Barr Government’s questionable priorities.
Recent statistics from Tourism Research Australia, provided by the Federal Government, could cast doubt on the anticipated demand for upscale lodging in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). According to the latest figures, international visitors to the ACT increased by 5 percent from 2024 to the end of September 2025; however, their overall spending decreased by 4 percent during the same period. Meanwhile, domestic tourism saw only a slight decline of 1 percent, but spending fell sharply by 14 percent. Thus, while more visitors are coming to the national capital, their willingness to spend—particularly on accommodation—seems to be waning.
However, major international hotel groups like the Dubai-based Crystalbrook Collection do not make investment decisions lightly or based solely on fluctuating annual visitor statistics. CEO Geoff York, who has a deep understanding of the Canberra market from his previous role managing the Park Royal/Crowne Plaza hotel, recognizes the potential risks associated with seasonal visitor variances. He emphasizes the necessity of diversifying revenue streams beyond just room bookings.
The Aurora hotel will not only boast 225 guest rooms but will also include five dedicated spaces for conferences and events, one of which can accommodate up to 300 attendees. "We purposefully included conference facilities in this design because we see it as a pivotal aspect of our hotel’s business model," York explained. This strategic approach also aims to integrate the local community into the hotel's operations, providing an elegant venue for celebrations and cultural gatherings right in the city's center.
In addition to its event spaces, the hotel will enhance local dining and retail experiences, with the renowned Raku restaurant set to establish its presence as a major tenant on the ground floor, alongside plans for a significant retail partner that will be announced soon.
On the top level, guests can look forward to a yet-to-be-revealed fine dining establishment offering stunning aerial views of the city, while the beloved café Gus' Place will find a new home within the hotel.
Construction of the hotel has been a long time coming; it has undergone various planning phases since its conception, initially with Geocon and later TP Dynamics, which quickly moved forward after acquiring the site and the pre-approved plans. Recently, the project reached a significant milestone with the topping out of the ten-story structure, marking the transition into the facade and fitting phase, with an opening slated for early 2027.
Craig Gillman, CEO of the City Renewal Authority, asserts that this establishment will revolutionize the urban landscape. "Having a destination hotel in the heart of our city, especially a five-star venue, will attract tourists and invigorate the area. It will provide a wonderful gathering spot for Canberrans, especially at Raku as it redefines itself," he remarked.
The introduction of the Aurora hotel is expected to dramatically revitalize Garema Place and its surroundings, areas that have long been in need of rejuvenation. Business districts have historically struggled due to their proximity to the expansive Canberra Centre shopping mall, which overshadows the central business district. The influx of guests brought in by the new hotel is anticipated to redirect some focus back to these areas, fostering positive outcomes for existing businesses and drawing in new ones.
Coupled with recent improvements made to Garema Place, the hotel is set to modernize and elevate the area's atmosphere, creating a more inviting and secure environment for residents and encouraging them to engage with their city.
The CRA is actively contributing to making the urban experience more pleasant by transforming it into a shaded, green pedestrian-friendly corridor complete with ample seating and tables. However, public sector efforts can only go so far.
Private investments, such as the hotel and other nearby developments, are essential for revitalizing the city and ensuring it becomes a vibrant hub. While the idea of a five-star hotel may seem extravagant, it stands to serve as a catalyst for much-needed change in an area that has long awaited it.
Some may reminisce about the old central business district, but it was characterized by uninspiring asphalt parking lots and unappealing storefronts that hardly represented the dignity of the national capital. What is emerging from the complex undertakings of current urban development will be a contemporary city that better mirrors the values and aesthetics of this century, rather than the last, with the Crystalbrook Aurora hotel playing an integral role in that transformation.
