A shocking revelation has emerged regarding the proposed demolition of a beloved town theatre, leaving local councillors feeling deceived and the community in an uproar.
The Prince of Wales Theatre, a 427-seat venue in Cannock, faces an uncertain future.
In October, Cannock Chase District Council's planning committee approved the demolition of the Forum Shopping Centre, but assured councillors that the theatre would be spared. A condition was even added to protect its position. However, a recent cabinet meeting on December 4th took a controversial turn, agreeing to include the theatre "within the regeneration programme with the intention to demolish, subject to planning consent."
But here's where it gets controversial...
Councillor Darrell Mawle, who proposed a motion to refer the cabinet's decision back, expressed his shock and concern. He stated that members lacked sufficient evidence to justify such a drastic action. According to Mawle, there was no thorough social and economic impact assessment conducted to support the demolition, and alternative options for the theatre's operation were not adequately explored.
Fellow committee member Samantha Thompson, who also serves on the planning committee, felt conned. She said, "There was a lot of hope for the Prince of Wales Theatre, and it's as if we were given false promises. I feel let down and hoodwinked."
The theatre's closure is part of cost-cutting measures to address a £1.3m council budget shortfall. In September, the cabinet voted against transferring the theatre to the Cannock Chase Theatre Trust (CCTT), despite a passionate campaign from local residents.
And this is the part most people miss...
When the shopping centre application was submitted, the decision to deny the theatre's transfer as a community asset to CCTT had not yet been made. This crucial detail was revealed by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, which covers public service organizations and councils.
The future of the Prince of Wales Theatre hangs in the balance, and the community is divided. Some argue that the theatre's demolition is necessary for regeneration, while others believe it could be a valuable community asset.
