Electric vehicles are making a significant impact on emissions reduction, and it's all thanks to a clever federal tax incentive!
The Electric Car Discount has been a game-changer, boosting sales and lowering emissions. In 2025, we saw a 0.4% drop in transport emissions compared to the previous year, and that's no small feat.
But here's where it gets controversial: transport emissions were on the rise across most sectors, with diesel and aviation leading the charge. However, the discount's impact on electric vehicle (EV) adoption has been a bright spot, with emissions from petrol cars dropping significantly.
Rohan Martin, CEO of the National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association, praised the discount's success. "Half of all new EVs sold in Australia today are thanks to this initiative. It's making a real difference for everyday Australians, especially those in the outer suburbs, who might not have considered the switch otherwise," he said.
The discount removes the fringe benefit tax on EVs priced under the luxury car threshold, currently set at $91,387 for fuel-efficient vehicles. This means substantial savings for those who opt for a novated lease.
And this is the part most people miss: the biggest emissions reductions were seen in fugitive emissions and the electricity sector. Large-scale renewables are outperforming coal and gas, and rooftop solar systems are making a significant impact.
Energy Minister Chris Bowen believes Australia is on the right track. "Our approach is commonsense: cheaper, cleaner energy, and more affordable, eco-friendly cars. We're making progress towards our climate targets, but we can't let up now. The Coalition's energy plan threatens to undo all our hard work by halting the renewables rollout and relying on aging coal infrastructure."
Another intriguing aspect is the decline in stationary emissions, particularly from gas and diesel in manufacturing, mining, and residential sectors. This is partly due to metals manufacturing moving away from coal and households embracing gas phase-out policies.
The ACT, Victoria, and New South Wales are leading the way with policies to phase out gas in various properties, reducing emissions and preserving gas supplies for essential industries.
