Coleraine FC: A Man's Dream Comes True with Support for Learning Disabilities
How a football enthusiast's dream became a reality with the help of a community initiative

While Old Trafford may be known as the Theatre of Dreams, for Jonathan Fillis, the Showgrounds at Coleraine FC is where his dream truly came to life. The 31-year-old, who has a learning disability, has been volunteering at the football club's shop every week since 2024, often dropping by on match days. His dedication and passion have made him an integral part of the club's community.
Jonathan is one of 700 individuals supported by the Northern Trust's Day Opportunities program, which offers a range of roles and activities. His family's growing confidence and independence highlight the importance of providing people with learning disabilities with opportunities for work and social interaction.
However, Mencap, a charity supporting individuals with learning disabilities, notes that such opportunities are not consistently available across all of Northern Ireland. The availability depends on the geographical area. Over the years, Jonathan has been encouraged to attend college and has volunteered in a café and charity shops, showcasing his versatility and dedication.
For the past 18 months, he has been working closely with Scott Smyth, Coleraine FC's retail and ticket manager. Smyth praises Jonathan's positive impact on the club, stating that he brings a 'real buzz' to the team and is well-known among the first team and its manager. This collaboration has fostered a supportive environment, where Jonathan's contributions are valued and recognized.
The Northern Trust's Day Opportunities Service, established 20 years ago, aims to empower adults with learning disabilities to access paid employment, volunteering, social enterprise, and recreational activities. The trust's spokesperson emphasizes that over 700 service users are living fulfilling lives through these initiatives.
Jonathan's brother, Stephen Fillis, a Day Opportunities coordinator, has been instrumental in supporting individuals on the program. His relationship with Jonathan has helped him assist other families in finding community support and opportunities. Stephen believes that the program has given Jonathan the freedom to explore his interests and live the life he desires.
Jonathan's father, Dougie Fillis, expresses his gratitude for the Day Opportunities support, describing it as a 'lifeline'. He recalls the challenges Jonathan faced in school, where he remained in the same class for nine years. The program has enabled Jonathan to become more independent, even taking the bus into town on his own. Dougie highlights the positive impact of the initiative, stating that it has released tension for the family and allowed Jonathan to connect with the community.
Without the program, Dougie suggests that Jonathan would have been largely confined to the house. The initiative has played a crucial role in Jonathan's social development, helping him get to know people and build a network. Dougie emphasizes the need for continued support for individuals with learning disabilities to find employment opportunities, ensuring they can thrive in their communities.
Karen Gilgunn from Mencap Northern Ireland acknowledges the varying access to opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities, with some experiencing social isolation. She praises the progress made in providing opportunities for individuals like Jonathan and stresses the importance of inclusion within society. Gilgunn also calls for identifying and addressing gaps in support to combat isolation, ensuring that everyone has the right to work, be included, and live a fulfilling life.
