It’s not every day that a collegiate sports program can celebrate a full decade of existence, let alone one that has achieved such remarkable success in that short span. McKendree University's swim and dive program, which recently crossed its 10-year mark, has not just participated; it has dominated. Personally, I find it astounding how quickly this program has ascended from its inception to become a powerhouse in NCAA Division II.
Building a Dynasty from Scratch
The journey began in the 2016-2017 season with a clear vision: to establish a program that would immediately make waves. The hiring of Jimmy Tierney, a coach with 21 years of experience leading a Big Ten program at Northwestern, was a clear signal of intent. What makes this appointment particularly fascinating is the immediate confidence placed in him by then Director of Athletics Chuck Brueggemann, who predicted an "immediate impact." In my opinion, this wasn't just hopeful rhetoric; it was a strategic move that laid the groundwork for the sustained excellence we've witnessed.
A Culture of Champions: Conference Triumphs
Looking at the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) statistics alone is enough to raise eyebrows. In just a decade, McKendree has produced an incredible 136 GLVC champions, shattered 39 conference records, and garnered 39 Swimmer of the Week accolades. The fact that they’ve also secured two Swimmer of the Year awards – Gregg Lichinsky in 2020 and Fabio Dalu in 2021 – speaks volumes about the caliber of talent being cultivated. What’s especially noteworthy is the emergence of multiple GLVC Freshman of the Year honorees, like Vova Gavrysh in 2025, and Andrea Menard-Cordoba as the sole Diver of the Year in 2024. From my perspective, this consistent flow of individual brilliance, coupled with Coach Tierney's two GLVC Coach of the Year awards in 2018 and 2020, paints a picture of a program that consistently fosters and develops top-tier athletes.
National Spotlight: A True Contender
But McKendree's success doesn't stop at the conference level. On the national stage, the Bearcats have been nothing short of spectacular. Accumulating 375 All-American honors and 133 CSCAA Scholar All-American distinctions is a testament to both athletic prowess and academic dedication. The program boasts 18 national champions and 15 runners-up, a remarkable feat that underscores their consistent presence at the pinnacle of collegiate swimming and diving. What I find particularly striking is that they have broken six national records and still hold two – in the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly. This enduring dominance in specific events suggests a deep understanding of technique and a commitment to pushing boundaries. Their consistent finishes in the top four at the national championships, including a third-place finish in 2023, solidify their status as a national contender year after year. Fabio Dalu being named National Swimmer of the Year in 2021 is, in my opinion, the crowning achievement of this incredible decade.
More Than Just Wins: A Legacy of Sportsmanship
Beyond the medals and records, there's another aspect that truly stands out: sportsmanship. Winning the James R. Spalding Team Sportsmanship award six times in ten years is, to me, a powerful indicator of the program's character. It suggests that while they are fiercely competitive, they operate with integrity and respect. This, more than any individual victory, is what builds a lasting legacy. What this really suggests is that McKendree isn't just building athletes; they're building well-rounded individuals who understand the value of fair play.
The Road Ahead
As McKendree Swim and Dive embarks on its second decade, the question isn't if they will continue to succeed, but how they will evolve. The foundation built by Coach Tierney and his athletes is incredibly strong. Personally, I believe the focus will remain on nurturing talent, pushing academic excellence, and continuing to redefine what's possible in NCAA Division II swimming and diving. It's a story of ambition, dedication, and a remarkable decade of achievement that has set a high bar for years to come. What will be fascinating to watch is how they continue to innovate and inspire the next generation of swimmers and divers.
