And this is the part most people miss... Sandoval's best season was in 2022, where he showcased his talent with a 6-9 record, a 2.91 ERA, and an impressive 151 strikeouts. Despite a dip in performance in 2023, he was still a key part of the rotation until his injury in 2024.
Tim Healey of The Boston Globe also weighed in, tweeting, "The Red Sox' Patrick Sandoval faced batters for the first time post-surgery. He's in the running for the No. 5 spot in the rotation. As for the bullpen, he said he's up for whatever the team needs."
The Red Sox's starting rotation seems set with Garrett Crochet, Ranger Suarez, Sonny Gray, and Brayan Bello leading the pack. This leaves Sandoval in a competitive battle for the fifth spot, up against the likes of Johan Oviedo, Connelly Early, and Payton Tolle.
