In a bold move, Tesla Sweden has found a way to outsmart labor unions and their blockade of Supercharger stations. Just before the holiday cheer, Tesla unveiled a new charging station in Arlandastad, Stockholm, powered by its own Megapack battery. But here's the twist: this station operates without a direct connection to Sweden's electricity grid, which has been effectively frozen by union action.
Tesla's innovative solution comes after facing significant challenges connecting its charging stations to the Swedish power grid. Seko, a prominent Swedish trade union, has been blocking new electrical connections for Superchargers, making it nearly impossible to open new sites. Despite this, Tesla has persevered and brought stations online in Malmö and Södertälje, thanks to grid operators activating the sites, only to later claim it was done in error.
But the Arlandastad station is different. Tesla's use of the Megapack battery bypasses the need for a permanent grid connection, allowing them to sidestep the unions' blockade. Swedish journalist Peter Esse highlights the significance of this move, explaining that the station likely relies on nearby companies to recharge the batteries through private arrangements.
And this is where it gets controversial. While Tesla has successfully launched eight charging stalls at the Arlandastad site, it's just a fraction of the planned 40 chargers. However, the fact that Tesla Sweden could circumvent the unions' efforts is remarkable, especially considering that Superchargers are used by various EV brands, not just Tesla.
Esse points out that this Megapack workaround isn't easily replicable elsewhere. Arlandastad is unique due to neighboring operators already having grid power access, enabling Tesla to indirectly source electricity. Interestingly, Esse also notes that the unions' blockades haven't significantly impacted Tesla's sales, as many customers charge their vehicles at home.
But the story doesn't end there. Tesla's legal battles continue with Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, which is heading to a jury trial. Musk accuses OpenAI of misleading him about its charitable purpose while accepting billions in funding. A federal judge has rejected OpenAI and Microsoft's attempts to dismiss the case, keeping the claims alive.
The judge cited internal OpenAI communications, including an email from co-founder Greg Brockman, who initially expressed a desire to continue as a nonprofit but later suggested a shift to a B-corp structure. Musk's legal team sees this as evidence of false assurances, while OpenAI maintains that the lawsuit is baseless.
