Aston Martin has decided to forgo the initial two days of the inaugural pre-season Formula 1 test for 2026 in Barcelona, according to insights from Autosport.
Currently, Formula 1 is conducting a five-day shakedown session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya from January 26 to 30, leading up to additional tests scheduled in Bahrain on February 11-13 and February 18-20, as teams gear up for the upcoming racing season.
This year marks a significant shift with extensive regulatory changes, prompting the Catalan test to be a closed-door event where teams are restricted to a maximum of three days of track activity.
Notably, it is confirmed that several teams including Mercedes, Audi, Alpine, Haas, Cadillac, Racing Bulls, and Red Bull will be hitting the track on the first day. Meanwhile, McLaren and Ferrari are slated to begin their testing efforts on Tuesday.
In contrast, Williams recently announced its decision to skip the Barcelona test to concentrate on preparations for the official Bahrain test instead, citing delays in the FW48 program which necessitated a series of virtual tests.
As for Aston Martin, details about their plans remain somewhat unclear. However, Autosport has revealed that the team is unlikely to make its appearance in Barcelona until at least Wednesday, with Thursday being a feasible option.
Despite the presence of Aston Martin's hospitality and support crews at the circuit, it appears that the team is facing development delays similar to those of Williams. The new regulations for 2026 are presenting considerable hurdles for all teams, requiring adjustments across the entire vehicle. The chassis is not only lighter and more compact, but the power units are also integrating a larger share of electric energy—nearly a 50-50 division with the internal combustion engine.
The shift toward a lighter car chassis has already posed challenges for teams striving to comply with the new minimum weight requirement of 768 kg, reduced from last year’s limit of 800 kg.
For Aston Martin, this year marks a transition as they collaborate with a new power unit supplier, evolving from a Mercedes customer team to becoming a Honda works team. Additionally, the appointment of Adrian Newey as team principal represents a notable change, as he takes on this leadership role after decades of success as a championship-winning designer.
Given the considerable investments made by billionaire owner Lawrence Stroll, expectations for Aston Martin are understandably high going into the future; however, it seems they might struggle to complete the full three days of track testing in Barcelona this week.
